It’s Time to Work As a Game Tester!

Game testing, or more broadly, quality assurance testing, is the process of ironing out the kinks in a video game prior to its final release to the market. Generally speaking, before any video game for any console is released to the market, it has to undergo continuous bug tracking and repair.

The bug-tracking phase is performed by quality assurance personnel, or game testers. Game testers are always separate from the team that codes or programs the game itself.

A game tester may not know how to code, but his expertise is valued because he has the ability to observe, monitor, and record the bugs that emerge when gaming code is put to the final test: actual gameplay. Sure, a game tester may be dealing with an object that is used for entertainment and personal enjoyment.

However, the job itself is anything but. This is not to say that every gaming studio is horrible when it comes to quality assurance. However, you have to keep in mind that, like other employees, game testers may be subjected to certain pressures like deadlines.

Additionally, companies and game studios expect game testers to be able to produce bug reports on a regular basis. If you are a game tester and you have submitted only two bug reports in all of your months of stay in the company, don’t expect gleaming praise from your superiors.

1. Establish sustainable working routines. The life of a game tester is not very glamorous, and you are not there so that the game studio or company can keep you entertained or excited. In terms of personal motivation and efficiency, you have to create those things for yourself.

In short – don’t let the routine nature of your job get the best of you. If you are working on a PC game, the amount of time needed to iron out most of the bugs will take a longer period of time compared to the time needed to release a bug-free version of a mobile game.

2. Learn to stick to the specific details and requirements. These requirements can change from day to day, depending on what you are working on at the present time.

This is the main reason why it can be difficult to learn game testing by just reading programming languages and by playing even more video games. It’s not about those things at all. The process of identifying bugs and documenting these bugs is distinct from just playing a game.

3. Improve your writing and documenting skills as much as possible! When you find bugs in the game that you are working on, it is improbable that you can just run to some programmer and tell him about it.

If this was the system that companies used, no game would get out on time. It just takes too much time and the back-and-forth interaction between quality assurance and programming will be far too clunky.

That’s why you need to be excellent with your written communication skills, because that is how you will be communicating with the programming department. Without good writing skills, you will not flourish in this field at all.
